Gil talks about his decision to enlist in the Air Force rather than be drafted into the Army in 1967, and experiences as a C-130 pilot, including combat missions in Vietnam in 1972. Gil graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and worked as a news reporter. He had his flight training in Arizona before leaving for a 15-month assignment in Southeast Asia. Upon returning he would go on to manage the news department at WSAW-TV until his retirement in 2010. Gil became a Certified Flight Instructor in 2001 and is currently an active flight instructor at the Wausau Downtown Airport.
